Before You Blog: What You Need to Know Before You Start Writing

If you’ve been thinking about creating your own blog, chances are that you have some big goals. Maybe you want to blog as a way to cope with your stress. Perhaps your blog will be a way for you to educate others who are interested in your cause. You might even want to blog to promote your business. No matter what your ambition might be, it’s important that you understand exactly what you’re getting into before you create your website. Proper planning will not only help you create great content but can boost your readership, as well.    image_385749124

First , decide exactly what the purpose of your blog is. Many new bloggers make the mistake of creating a blog but don’t have a vision for the website. If you want to draw in new readers or to make money from your site, it’s important that your blog have a distinct purpose. If you constantly write about random topics or share unrelated information, it’s going to be a lot more challenging to develop a consistent readership.

You’ll also need to come up with an incredible name for your blog. Instead of naming your blog “Becky’s Site” or “Alex’s Page,” choose something catchy and memorable. Your blog title should ideally give readers an idea of what to expect from your site. The title should also be something that they’ll remember, though. If you pick something that is too long or obtuse, readers won’t be able to remember how to get to your site.

Once you’ve decided what your blog will be about and what you want to call your site, it’s time to choose your server. Many new bloggers choose to utilize a free host for their blog. The most popular hosts for blogs are Blogger and WordPress. If you plan to use your blog as a way to make money or draw in more customers for your business, you may want to consider paying for your own hosting. Websites like HostGator, GoDaddy, and BlueHost all offer paid-for services that bloggers can use. You’ll also get a domain name when you use these websites.

After you’ve chosen your server, it’s time to start creating your content. New bloggers tend to be very excited about their websites. When you first start writing, avoid the temptation to try to promote your site as soon as you have a post up. Instead, write several posts and publish them before you let your friends, family members, and current clientele know about your blog. This will give readers more content to read, but it will also let them know that you’re serious about your site. Nothing is more frustrating for readers than discovering a new blog that is rarely updated. Show your readers how committed you are to your site by creating at least five posts before you start promoting it.

Finally, you’ll want to promote your blog to the people that you know and work with on a regular basis. If you have a mailing list, send out an email with a link to your new blog. If you use social media on a regular basis, Tweet a message letting everyone know about the blog. Of course, you should always use hashtags to get even more readers with your post. If you share on your personal Facebook page, make sure that your blog’s content is appropriate for readers of all ages. You can also pin your blog posts to Pinterest each time you post an update as a way to get even more new readers.
